Instructions for the Pirate Hat By Nick Stokes.
Apparently these instructions are still out there on other servers.
I had taken them down because Nick dissapeared awhile back.
I just received an e-mail from a customer who tried and finished making
the hat with some trouble and could not find Nick. If there is anyone else
out there
that has tried and can help with some of your successful tips, please pass them
on to me.
"Greetings!
I found
the Captain Jack Sparrow Hat instructions on your site, and am in the process.
I tried to send an Email to the author of it, but the system tells me he never
logged in to the account....
Attached is the text I tried to send. If it would be possible to forward it on to him, I would certainly appreciated it!
Thanks,
Russ Curtis
Nick Stokes,
First, let me say Thank You for posting this! I looked actively for about three weeks before I finally came across your .pdf and it is exactly what I was after. Thank you!
I've just started the process, and I have a question or two...
Should the whole brim (the donut shaped piece) be wet before dipping part of it into the hot water? When I dipped it, the part that stayed out seemed to warp and bend due to the part in the hot water shrinking, I guess. I seems like it might have been easier to manipulate if the whole thing had been damp to start with. Just a thought...
So when stretching it onto my head-shaped bowl, I rushed it too much and it tore. Oops... So I figured I'd take a stab at saving it, and stitch up the tear and try again. While I stitched it, (Franken-hat, anyone?) of course the leather shrank. Frustrating... So then I re-cut the hole a little bigger, removing the torn part. (Are you ripping your hair out with frustration at how I've mangled your directions yet?) Then I re-dipped it, and it took very little stretching to get it to the head size I marked on my bowl. (I figure the band that connects the top on will just have to be a little wider.) Now I've got the flaps folded up and clipped, but I must say it kind of almost resembles a bastard stepchild of what I had in mind... I can say with almost definite certainty that it'll have character when its done. Heheh...
Any suggestions to help me save my near disaster?
Thanks,
Russ Curtis
